Performance: Sleep

BFA exhibition, 2014.

This performance began with myself walking onto stage, fully painted with red and white paint. I then laid down on a styrofoam bed, blanketed with canvas, suggesting I am getting ready to sleep.

As some time passes, my assistant pours a small amount of water onto my body from 1 of 10 black buckets lining the stage. This action signifies me to turn over onto my other side. This process repeats until all buckets are gone. Each bucket has a bit more water in it, and my assistant pour the water faster, more aggressively until I am ‘drowning’ in my thoughts.

The performance ends when a curtain is pulled to reveal the bright, blue light from outside. This suggest a new day, which brings me to walk off stage.

Like my recent work, this piece comments on the prevalence of anxiety and depression in our society.
