In-Progress work

My in-process work involves using wax and candle wicks to explore concepts similar to my soap

pieces. To me, wax, like soap, is a material that has the ability to transition to different physical

states. It can be melted, burned, etc., while soap can be washed, soaked, etc. These actions conjure

metaphorical, poetic meaning inherent to each medium. Candlewicks are of course associated with

candles, that of which you ‘blow’ out. Blowing a candle out references a silent wish, which suggests

a quiet emotional expression from an individual. I imagine referencing every wish an individual has

made in their life with a strand of candlewick, amounting to a large, dense work.

I am in the process of making this large, table-top piece that will capture, preserve, and honor this

notion of ‘wishing’. Whilst also commenting on the societal prevalence of ‘hoping and wishing’,

reflecting a lack of agency in our capitalist society where many feel they have little control over

achieving their desires.
